Walter Gene Powell, age 70, of Charlotte passed away on November 21, 2017.

Born May 1, 1947 in Rutherford County, a native of Ellenboro, he is the son of the late Walter Powell and is survived by his mother, Barbara Eloise Powell of Ellenboro, NC. Gene was a graduate of East Rutherford High School and Western Carolina University. He was also a member of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity at Western Carolina. After graduating from Western Carolina, Gene located to Charlotte where he established a career as an estimator with construction companies in Charlotte and was married to the late Julia Ann Rankin Powell. Gene was past President and a Director of the Charlotte Professional Estimators Association.

Gene was athletic and enjoyed many activities including snow skiing, golfing, bike riding and running. Gene also enjoyed many weekends Shag dancing with his wife, Judy. Gene was later elected into the East Rutherford Athletic Hall of Fame.

In addition to his mother, those left to cherish the memories include his wife of fourteen years, Judith R. Powell of Charlotte; one step daughter, Amy Kastner of Charlotte and her husband Chris; two brothers, Wayne Powell and his wife, Jane of Ellenboro, Ronnie Powell and his wife, Gilda also of Ellenboro. He is also survived by four nephews, one granddaughter one great niece.

The family wants to thank the caring staff of Brookdale South Park and the Community Home Care and Hospice and wishes to give a special thank you to Helena Brown, RN.

Gene was a member of Bethel Baptist Church of Ellenboro and a memorial service was held at the church followed by a brief graveside service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Lewy Body Dementia Association, 912 Killian Road SW, Lilburn, GA 30047 or to the charity of choice.

Harrelson Funeral and Cremation Services is assisting with local arrangements.
