The Final Four takes place Saturday and then the championship on Monday, but unfortunately, the ACC and all North Carolina schools have been eliminated from the tourney.

Duke succumbed to a major drubbing by Arizona last Friday in the Sweet 16. Who saw that coming?

While North Carolina lasted until the Elite 8 as they were ousted by Kentucky. One glaring stat stands out in Kentucky’s win. Despite producing the same amount of field goals (27), Kentucky was 12-for-22 from 3-point land, while UNC was 3-for-16. In other words, a Wildcat 66-57 edge in points by field goals.

However, this year’s Final Four will consist of UCONN versus Kentucky and the two darlings left dancing... Virginia Commonwealth playing Butler.

Butler played in the title game last year as they lost to Duke. Let’s face it, Butler, a school of 4,200 students has nothing else to prove, but still have their sites set on a title. VCU has been impressive themselves as they got past a play-in game and now their defense has set the tone in four more victories to get to the Final 4.

Beware locals, a big softball game comes Friday afternoon, when the undefeated ladies of Chase (7-0) visit East Rutherford in a 2A showdown.

East Rutherford, who is currently 2-3, definitely is a better team than their record indicates, but Chase has been on quite a tear so far. Chase hasn’t given up more than three runs in a contest since its season opening win over Crest and is scoring an average of 7.5 runs per game.

Thomas Jefferson sophomore, Anna Dedmon now has 28 goals in nine game this season as the Lady Gryphons are 7-0-2 so far this season in girls soccer.

NASCAR goes to Martinsville’s half-mile this weekend. For those who like contact sports, tune into Fox on Sunday or a buy a ticket and travel 3 hours north. No matter what, either choice you make is well worth it.

By the way, I want to back up for a second if I may.

A year from now, we could see a new Rutherford County all-time scoring leader in basketball. Frances Hernandez of R-S Central holds that record with 1,975 points, but rising R-S Central senior, Shannon Hines is embarking on that mark.

At the moment, Hines has 1,513 points in her high school career and needs just 463 points to break it. The past two seasons, the Lady Hilltopper guard has put up 574 and 572 points respectively.
