Last week, Tyler White was hoping to get a shot at the big leagues following his four-year effort of school and baseball career at Western Carolina University.

The former Chase High baseball standout received that nod as he became a part of the Houston Astros in the 33rd round of the Major League Baseball Draft over the weekend. While helping Western Carolina pick up the So-Con regular season title this season and becoming a Louisville Slugger All-American, being drafted by a major league team just made 2013 even sweeter for the Rutherford County native.

It’s looks like Houston got a pretty good pick since he absolutely shelled the ball this season and has done some damage in recent years with the wood bat as a Gastonia Grizzly as well.

In a interview a week ago, the only thing White could do was just wait, see and be positive no matter what. Patience has paid off and I am sure that the Astros will find him a place in one of their farm league programs in the near future.

Speaking of farm league teams, Ryan Arrowood is having a decent summer with the Asheville Tourists. The former R-S Central alumnist has pitched 39 innings, posted a 3.43 ERA and struck out 48 batters in 17 appearances so far. Arrowood has started just two games without getting a decision, but is 3-0 in relief efforts.

The Colorado Rockies have to like what they watched last Tuesday as Arrowood allowed no hits, no runs, walked two and sat down seven on strikes against the Rome Braves in four innings of work.

Kudos to Major League baseball’s Arizona Diamondbacks as they picked up Cory Hahn in the late stages of the draft. If you haven’t heard the story, it’s truly unbelievable. Hahn, who was a highly touted player out of California, went to college at Arizona State. During his freshman year, Hahn slid into second base and collided with a University of New Mexico player’s knee. As a result of the freak accident, Hahn became paralyzed from the chest down.

This year, would be Hahn’s first year of eligibility for the draft and Arizona decided not only to draft him, but they also want to give him a job within the organization. In a world of business, politics and what can you do for us mentality, the Diamondbacks organization flipped the script. They asked, how can we help one of our own?

The move doesn’t fix everything, but it does show that there are some people who are willing to stand up and make a dream a come true. It’s a popular move as well, where man can hide his emotions, yet show his heart. Although, they lead the National League West Division right now, I cast a vote for the Diamondbacks as organization of the year.

And finally, the Forest City Owls have mightily struggled to a 2-6 campaign. The Owls have lost six straight, but a pair of those have come by one-run losses. For the moment, run support has been an issue as Forest City hasn’t scored more than two runs in a game during this six-game slide.

Post 423 is struggling a little too at 2-4, but have dropped a couple of close games in the early run of the season. Hopefully, both clubs can get on track once the rain decides to finally stop.
