The Rutherford County Department of Social Services along with the Rutherford County Senior Center is hosting an Elder Abuse Awareness Day Initiative to coincide with World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD).
What is elder abuse? Elder abuse can be financial, emotional, physical, or sexual. It also includes people who are neglected and those who neglect themselves (self-neglect). Social isolation, financial or emotional stress, and dementia can make a senior vulnerable to abuse.
WEAAD was launched in 2006 to provide an opportunity for communities around the world to promote a better understanding of abuse, neglect, and exploitation of older persons.
