It's not every day that Santa visits Little Red School in Forest City. But some gifts, it seems, just can't wait until Christmas Eve.

That gift was the return of Jacob Alexander to Forest City. Jacob, a petroleum vehicle operator in the Army, has been deployed to Kuwait since February. It was the wish of his daughter, Aubrey, 4, for him to be home this Christmas.

Normally, a review of the year would come about this time, but since Christmas comes this week, here are some things I would like to see upcoming in the sports world. This is in random order.

Ada Fay Wallace, age 95, of Forest City, passed away December 20, 2015.

Mildred Beckett Nicholas, age 72, of Cliffside, NC, passed away, Saturday, December 19, 2015.

Ann Phillips Elliott, age 80, of Henrietta, passed away Saturday, December 19, 2015.

Tamara Morrow Tate, age 75, cherished wife of Donald Tate, to whom she was happily married for 56 years, passed away December 19, 2015.

Charles "Doc" Clark, age 68, of Forest City, passed away December 18, 2015.

Howard Hamrick, age 95, of Forest City, passed away Wednesday, December 16, 2015.

Kenneth Paul Smith, age 73 of Ellenboro, passed away December 15, 2015.

Mrs. Wanda Hendrix McAbee age 63 of Forest City NC passed away on December 15 2015.

Gentry Wright, 88, of Walnut Grove, GA, formerly of Rutherfordton, NC, formerly of Hampstead, NC, finally left this earth to join his wife in Heaven on Tuesday, December 15, 2015.

Rebecca Dale Atkins, age 75 of Lattimore, NC passed away Monday, December 14, 2015.

James W. Johnson of Bostic, NC passed away on December 12, 2015.

ECA Scholarship

Rutherford County Extension & Community Association (ECA) announces its 2016 scholarships. High school seniors, full-time college students, and adults wanting to attend college are eligible. North Carolina residents planning to attend a NC accredited college, community college or technical institute in the fall of 2016 may apply. Applications are available at all high schools and at Cooperative Extension. The North Carolina ECA Scholarship deadline is February 1, 2016 and the Rutherford County ECA Scholarship deadline is April 1, 2016. For more information, call Cooperative Extension at 828-287-6020

The first family of Christmas might not live at the North Pole after all. Instead, they might reside right here in Rutherford County.

The Town of Rutherfordton is on its way to having a trail system that will provide opportunities for residents to get outdoors, and to potentially boost economic development.

So, if they campaign hasn't started, let's go ahead and make it official.

If Cam Newton isn't the MVP, I don't know who else it could be? Finally, Coach Jimmy Johnson saw the light on FOX NFL Sunday. Newton continues to lead an offense that doesn't give enough credit.
