40th Annual Mayfest Biggest and Best!
40th Annual Mayfest Biggest and Best!
The 40th Annual Rutherfordton Mayfest turned out to be the biggest and best in its’ history. To some, it was Cinco De Mayo, but to Rutherford County, May 5th was all about the Mayfestival in Rutherfordton!
The day was another family fun day and celebration of Rutherfordton being 225 years old! The entire year, 2012, is dedicated to continual celebrations of Rutherford County’s county seat.

Saturday, May 5th saw thousands of family and friends come out on a beautiful day. Festival food, demonstrations, and crafts all contributed to a wonderful celebration. At the courthouse, live music filled the air and welcomed guests. The kiddie bounce inflatables and the pony rides were the youngsters favorites.

Rutherford Weekly Sports Special: Tyler White
Rutherford Weekly Sports Special: Tyler White
We have seen some kids from the county go off and play college ball, but we can add another successful one to that list in Chase High graduate, Tyler White.

White, who is in his third year at Western Carolina University plays baseball for the Catamounts and also helped Chase to one of its best seasons in 2009 with a 15-8 record and a third round 2A playoff appearance. Last summer, he topped off a great season with the Gastonia Grizzlies of the Coastal Plain League by helping them win the CPL title.

In NCAA play at WCU, White hasn’t backed off from being a dangerous threat at the plate.

Listen To Life
How much “drama” is there in your life?

When our daughter was in middle school, I discovered that it’s far more traumatic than you might imagine—for her that is.  There was so much “drama” in middle school.  The “he said/she said” creates “issues” for these kids.

Frankly I don’t remember all of this “drama.” But I was more into baseball, fishing, and hunting than relationships back then.  It was a different era.  We all wanted to wear Levis, I do remember that.  And I do recall getting a lecture or two about peer pressure.  Maybe that was what sufficed for our drama.  Perhaps with us it was about peer pressure.

Outdoor Truths
Outdoor Truths
I’ve always heard that writing is more about perspiration than inspiration. It’s true. Even though it is very fulfilling to write about the outdoors, it is also difficult at times to continue to find worthy subjects and stories. Sometimes my mind soars with information faster than my fingers can type. Other times those same fingers seem like they’re waiting impatiently for the next command. During the times of inspiration I can’t wait to get to the computer. During other times I dread its call. Every writer loves the moments of inspiration.

I’ve discovered over the years there is a catalyst that induces inspiration. That catalyst is “presence.” Here’s what I mean. I find that when I’ve been too busy to be outside, the inspirational juices dry up. But when I am in the presence of the water or woods those same juices began to flow.

“The Ballad Of Nancy Hanks”
“The Ballad Of Nancy Hanks”
Editors Note: Once again, the play “The Ballad Of  Nancy Hanks” was performed by the Rutherford Community Theatre. This time, it was presented at Concord Baptist Church. This made it a special event, because it is claimed that Concord Baptist is where Nancy Hanks attended and took her son, little Abraham. It is claimed that Bostic is where he was born. The mystery of  Abraham Lincoln’s birth still continues to this day. This article is offered as a suggestion which could benefit Rutherford County. The play is both interesting and well done.
