The Fall Festival Of Leaves Begins At Lake Lure...
The Fall Festival Of Leaves Begins At Lake Lure...

I think that I shall never see
A poem lovely as a tree
A tree whose hungry mouth is prest
Against the sweet earth’s flowing breast;
A tree that looks at God all day,
And lifts her leafy arms to pray;
A tree that may in summer wear
A nest of robins in her hair;
Upon whose bosom snow has lain;
Who intimately lives with rain.
Poems are made by fools like me,
But only God can make a tree.

Watkins to be a Tiger, Chase Easily Wins
How do you tell the world where you plan to attend to play college football at? Well, Carlos Watkins and Trojans got a little creative on Friday night.

Watkins, primed as one of the top recruits in the nation as a defensive tackle, drove a golf cart decorated in orange and purple balloons through a banner to say that he indeed would a be Clemson Tiger next season.

Outdoor Truths
Outdoor Truths
The pictures are flying in. They’re coming from everywhere from Maine to Missouri and from Texas to Tennessee. The hunt is on. Bears and birds, ducks and deer; it seems that most hunters are filling tags and freezers. And the next two months will probably be even better as the ducks move south and the deer begin to rut.

Do you get it right every time?

So many people I coach are paralyzed by the possibility of making a mistake.  “What if I fail?” stops them dead in their tracks, creating a fear of doing anything lest they get criticized by others or embarrass themselves or go bankrupt or a hundred other potential negative outcomes.

Outdoor Truths
Outdoor Truths
I had been in the stand only 15 minutes when the doe appeared. When it crossed the path that I came in on, she immediately smelled an unfamiliar odor and followed it with her eyes to my tree stand. Now, she was at full alert, trying to bring into focus the blob that was in the tree. She moved to my left trying to wind me but was unable to satisfy her curiosity until I had come to full draw. I landed what I thought was a good shot. It was a little high but I was sure it did the job. Instead of a pass- through shot, the arrow stayed planted in her side. I knew this would present a few problems, but I was still confident. After nearly three hours, I left without finding the deer or even one spot of blood. My disappointment still haunts me; not the disappointment that comes from a missed opportunity, but the kind that comes because shot deer are meant to be found and are meant to supply food for the table. Otherwise it’s a needless death.

How long is a minute?

I’m not exactly sure how long a minute is anymore.  Sometimes a minute seems longer than at other times.  For instance, I’m driving to an appointment and I’m running a little late.  The traffic light I’m approaching turns yellow, then red.  I have to stop.  A minute seems like a long time.

Or, I’m traveling and simply must stop to go to the bathroom.  When I arrive at a convenient mart and run in and the restroom door is locked, a minute seems like a very long time.
