Breast Cancer Awareness Night At McNair... Forest City Owls Hit A Big Home Run!
It was a first time event for the Forest City Owls. As an important part of the community, the Owls created a very special salute. On Saturday, July 7th, a special Breast Cancer Awareness- “Pink Out Night” was held at McNair Field. Everyone was encouraged to wear pink. Money raised was to be given to cancer needs in Rutherford County. All of the coaches and players pink shirts, along with the pink bats from the evening’s game against the Columbia Blowfish would be auctioned off. Everything turned out to be a sell out!

How’s your vacation?

Why is it that to take a week of vacation, you have to do two weeks of work before you leave and two weeks of work when you return?  You’re only gone a week! Does the work multiply  while you’re gone?

This reality can produce a certain amount of guilt about vacation times.  For instance, let’s say you go to the beach, pick up a seashell, and put it up to your ear.  Do you hear the soothing tides of the ocean gently rolling in on the shore?

I’ve got a few more bass fishing trip in store before I turn into a deer hunter. My friends love hunting season because they now have the lake to themselves. They’ll enjoy some of the best fishing of the year when the weather turns a little colder. As for me, I’ll trade a bent rod for a bent bow. But it’s not always been this way. My early adult years were spent almost exclusively fishing. I threw a worm in the spring and summer and a ‘Rat l Trap’ and Rooster Tail in the fall and winter. Back then, there was only one kind of reel: a Mitchell 300. Other than replacing an occasional bail spring, they never went bad and were one of the best reels ever made.

What The Allmendinger Is Going On Here?
What The Allmendinger Is Going On Here?

Yes, there is NASCAR news to get to, but legion baseball is first on the agenda.

Rutherford County Post 423 ended a the season in the first round of the legion playoffs this past week.

They lost after game four in a best of five series. In game one, Post 423 fell 10-3 on the road, then came back home and played maybe the best ball they had all season with a 5-3 victory. In game three, it was a cat and mouse type game, but Mint Hill prevailed 13-12 and the series ended the next night with a 13-9 loss. Post 423 (7-11), never really had a chance to gel this season after being forced to take a break by a new implemented rule of American Legion at the start of the campaign and inconsistent/young pitching took its toll as well.

Do you appreciate the people around you?

My wife injured her left shoulder some years ago and it was really painful, so painful that she couldn’t do the normal things she does every day.

“Don’t worry, honey,” I told her, “I’ll take care of your stuff and mine.”

Little did I know what I was in for.

You see, she runs the horse farm we live on which means that she’s constantly caring for the horses.  And she cooks most all of our meals.  And she takes care of our daughter’s needs like helping fix hair and choosing which outfits to wear.  Then there’s the grocery shopping, the housecleaning, and…well, you get the picture.

Outdoor Truths
Outdoor Truths
The temperatures have been sweltering even though summer has just begun. Three days in a row over 100 degrees makes outdoor activities less appealing – unless they include a dip in the lake, and even that is like swimming in a tub of hot bath water. Yes its summer, but I won’t complain. This is just the characteristics of where I live.

Post 423 Enters Playoffs, Owls Are First Half Champs
Post 423 Enters Playoffs, Owls Are First Half Champs
It’s been an up and down season this summer for Rutherford County’s Post 423 legion baseball club, but the regular season is over. On Wednesday, they started a five game playoff series with Mint Hill on the road. Post 423 is supposed to host game two on the fourth of July and game four if necessary on July 6th. Should they win the series, they will likey have to play Caldwell County, who is the no.1 seed from the west. Post 423 (6-8) has won four of its six regular season games on the road, so not all is lost by having to travel for possibly three games.
