Outdoor Truths
Outdoor Truths
One of the conditions that hunters have to face this time of year is the fog. Sometimes it lingers seemingly all day making it difficult to see especially when hunting with firearms. And then there’s the drive. Just seeing each turn can sometimes be almost impossible without some type of marker. This is the case at one of my hunting locations.

Do you forgive and forget?

Our school system was integrated when I was in 5th grade.  Carlton had never had a white friend before me, but we became friends despite the daily bomb threats and riots.  We haven’t seen each other since high school graduation, but recently Carlton and I got back together.  And he told me this story.

Area Ladies Hoops Tip-Off With a First Week Review
Last week, we took a trip around the county in previewing high school boys basketball. This week, we turn our attention a little more to ladies hoops.

No ladies basketball program in the county has more wins over the last three seasons than R-S Central’s. The Lady Hilltoppers have 55 wins over the past three seasons (17-9, 18-9, 20-7) and have went three rounds in back-to-back seasons of the 3A playoffs.

Outdoor Truths
The map showed 700 acres in famous Pike County, Illinois. And it was ours to hunt – 4 of us, that is. We had planned on this hunt for months and knew that we would be arriving at the prime time for the rut. The outfitter showed us where some of the best places to put a stand were, but also wanted us to scout the day before we were scheduled to hunt. The 700 acres were broken down into 3 sections; the east side, the west side, and the sanctuary which lay between the 2 and to the north. This was the animal’s safe haven. It was home plate. It was the place to reach after running the gauntlet of bows and bullets. And they seemed to know it was off limits to hunters. We could hunt on the edge of it and even on the thoroughfares that ran to it, but the sanctuary was the exclusive area for bucks and does alike.

Listen To Life
What are you thankful for today?

It seems to me that a lot of the conversations I listen to are more about what people don’t like, what they don’t have, what they don’t agree with, etc., than about what they do like, what they do have, what they agree with and just generally what they’re thankful for.  Focusing on these negatives causes your mind and spirit to attract more of them.  When you focus on the positives, you discover more of them in your life.
