Listen To Life

Few things in life last forever, do they?

I was packing a case of my books to ship to a business woman who purchased them to use as client appreciation gifts.  I needed a marker to write on the boxes so she’d know what was inside.

I dug around in my desk drawer and found a pack of markers in the back.  They had never been opened so I opened them, pulled out a blue one and started writing.  But the marker was dry.

Outdoor Truths
Outdoor Truths
Timing is everything. Have you ever just felt like you were out of sync with what was going on in the woods or on the water? Sometimes it seems that on the days that you can go fishing, the weather is terrible or the fish are uncooperative. And on the days that you can’t go, or just decide not to go; those are the days that limits are caught in the first hour. It’s the same with hunting.

Pre_Conference Look At High School Basketball: NFL Teams Make Playoff Push
Pre_Conference Look At High School Basketball: NFL Teams Make Playoff Push

Well, I have seen, heard, looked at stats and everything else under the sun to give a prognosis of how the high school basketball season should play out in the SMAC this season.

As for the boys, Patton, Chase, Burns and R-S Central should all have a number of close games this season with each other in fighting from last to fourth. I like the Hilltoppers finishing fourth out of this group with Chase still a bit of mystery to me. We will find out more after the first week of SMAC play.

“Down The Chimney St. Nicholas Came With A Bound!”
“Down The Chimney St. Nicholas Came With A Bound!”

For 20 years, two weeks in December, the Jolly Ol’ Man shows up to practice at Chimney Rock! Santa Claus comes to the Village of Chimney Rock and from the top of the rock, he drops down 200 feet! He is practicing for all the chimneys, regardless of size, he will have to come down on Christmas eve, all over the world.

The yearly event is something to behold. It is very popular especially with the kids. As they stand down below, in anticipation of his decent, you can hear them say: “Be careful Santa!” - “Don’t get hurt Santa!”.

Outdoor Truths
Outdoor Truths
There are about 30 days between the first deer rut and the second one. This second one is when those does cycle back into breeding phase if they were not bred during the first one. The time between these two can provide a little lull in the action. But I have actually found the second rut to be at times more productive than the first; especially if the weather has been cold. It seems the deer become more concentrated in the areas where the food is the most plentiful. When the underbrush dies in the woods, it leaves them having to forage in open fields. And when a doe in heat comes to a field, you can be sure a buck will be close behind. I want to be there waiting on him.

Listen To Life

Do you play tic-tac-toe?

I listen to life every chance I can, discovering positivity in all sorts of ways.  I recently learned 10 things about life while playing tic-tac-toe.  They are:

1.  The game is not difficult to play.  Life is pretty simple, too.

2.  Reduce the complicated to simple steps and you’ll play a lot better.  Pick a spot to call your own.

3.  Whether you’re the “X” or the “O” doesn’t really matter.  We’re all human.
