How long do your storms last?

I was in our yard working on something—cutting grass or roses or spreading mulch—something like that when all of a sudden the wind started gusting. Then the gusts grew more severe. I looked up in the sky and noticed that it was black with clouds. A storm was blowing up and quickly.

So I got my tools together and went inside just as huge drops of rain fell. It was one of those heavy downpours that the gutters can’t contain.  “Well, there goes my afternoon,” I thought.

Outdoor Truths
I’m not one of those professional archers who shoot their bow year-round. I am a hunter who has to wipe the dust off of it during this time of year. I know this is the period where I have to begin shooting in order to feel comfortable in various hunting situations when deer season comes about. But it’s so hot right now! And since my wife is not too keen about me setting up an indoor range down the hall in my house; I am going to have to endure the August heat for a chance at October meat.

Forest City Heat Want Another Banner
Forest City Heat Want Another Banner
Our county doesn’t hear about it as much as it should, but Forest City’s Youth Basketball of America organization is having another incredible summer.

The Forest City Heat, who won the 2010 state title in the 14-year-old division, repeated that feat over a month ago. Since that time, they have finished runner-up in two other tourneys, one in Augusta, Georgia and the other at a huge event in Arkansas.

Do you try?

A couple of really strong thunderstorms blew through where I live.  Their winds were so powerful that they blew up a corner of the tin roof on the barn where we store the hay we feed the horses.

I had someone estimate the cost of replacing it, but it would be a while before he could return to actually fix it. In the mean time, the hay and the inside of the barn were getting wet. I thought about trying to get up there myself, but my ladder didn’t seem long enough to reach the roof.

Outdoor Truths
Most mornings I am challenged before I really even begin my day. When I’m not hunting or fishing, I meet a few friends for an early morning run. The challenge is not actually in the run, even though they can be difficult as well. But the real confrontation comes as I see various people on the trail.
